Monzi’s guide to the ultimate theme park experience
While we’ve covered cheap theme park tickets, we want to ensure you have the coolest day possible. As a rule, if you’re struggling to stay awake on the way home then you’ve had a 10/10 day.
If you’re a theme park rookie, there are a ton of great tips that can make it a day to remember while also making your life so much easier.
So, let’s get into them.
Make a plan
Let’s begin with our top tip. Before visiting any theme park, do your research!!
Every theme park will provide an online, interactive map on their website. So, the night before, spend 30 minutes to an hour setting out your day. Know which rides you must experience or which shows you want to see.
Having a plan of attack allows you to get the most out of your day while ensuring you don’t miss any of the key attractions. It doesn’t have to be strict either. It’s simply a rough outline of how you will spend your time.
Finally, it’s important to be strategic with your plan. For example, go on the major rollercoasters before lunch. Why? Well, taking a ride on a full stomach usually doesn’t end too well.
Get cheap theme park tickets qld: buy online
Buying your tickets online before you arrive has two benefits.
First, you can jump the queues. Rather than lining up, credit card in hand, waiting to purchase your tickets, you can breeze past the crowds and get stuck into your day straight away.
Second, it can save you money. There are a range of discount codes and special offers online which can save you a ton. On the other hand, buying at the gate virtually ensures you’ll be paying full price.
Hit the key stuff first
There’s always a ride or attraction that you just have to experience. Our tip: do these first.
Typically, crowds build-up throughout the day meaning the lines will only get longer. Not only that, you don’t want to be rushing at the end of the day trying to cross the final few rides off your list.
Ticking off your big ticket items first ensures nobody goes home disappointed.
Ever visited a theme park during school holidays? They’re packed!
Hordes of families descend on the parks each day meaning lines will be long and parking will be limited.
A good rule of thumb is to aim to arrive 15-30 minutes before opening time. That way, you’ll get a park and can walk in when the gates open. You’ll be able to take advantage of the slightly smaller early crowds although it’ll get busier as the day goes along.
In addition to this, arriving early ensures you can get the most out of your day. Most theme parks are open during school holidays from mid-morning until late afternoon giving you approximately eight hours of fun.
Theme park days are long. If you’re going during summer, they’re hot too. Your clothing choices will make a difference.
Firstly, enclosed footwear is a must. If you’re walking the long distances from ride to ride, from one end of the park to the other, a lack of comfortable footwear will come back to bite you.
Second, wear your sun-smart clothes. A day out in the sun can leave you burnt to a crisp if you don’t take the proper precautions. Pack a hat and wear a shirt that covers your shoulders and neck if possible.
Being sun-smart and comfortable are within your control so make good choices.
The number one tip for parents: establish a meeting area
While the last thing you’d ever want is to lose a child, theme parks are renowned for separating children from their parents. That’s why at the start of the day, it’s critical to establish a meeting place.
Pick a landmark or some kind of defining feature and drill it into your kids’ minds. If at any point you get separated throughout the day, tell them to head straight there and you will meet them.
Establishing a common meeting point takes away the inevitable panic that can come with being separated from your child.
While in a perfect world the meeting place won’t be used, kids getting lost in a theme park happens all the time. At the very least, it’s a great safeguard to have just in case.
Know what you’re allowed to bring in
All theme parks have policies about what you are allowed and not allowed to bring into the park. As you might expect, food is at the heart of this.
While some parks allow you to bring in whatever food you would like, other parks don’t allow you to bring in any (unless you have a genuine medical need to do so).
Before you leave for the day, ensure you have checked the park’s guidelines and terms of entry. While cheap theme park tickets and bringing your own food are great money savers, it will all go to waste if your food’s not allowed in.
In order to have a great day, it’s important to pack well. While things such as water and sunscreen are a given, there are plenty of other items you’re going to need too.
At the same time, you don’t want to be lugging around a heavy bag all day. So, finding the right balance is crucial.
As a guide, consider packing the following items:
- Portable phone charger
- Change of clothes
- Hand sanitizer
- Tissues/napkins (or something similar)
Do your own thing
Rollercoasters aren’t for everyone. If you arrive and decide that certain rides aren’t for you, that’s totally fine. Don’t let anyone pressure you into getting on a ride you’re scared of or won’t enjoy.
You can still have a great day without taking on the most daring or thrilling rides. Simply work within your limits and only get on the rides you feel comfortable with.
While we’re on the topic, don’t pressure anyone into anything either. We’re not all adrenaline junkies. So, be respectful of people’s limits and boundaries.
It’s meant to be fun
Keep these three words in mind: fun over everything.
It’s easy to fall into the trap of arguing over which rides to experience or what food to eat but at the end of the day, who really cares.
You’re there to have fun. So, make compromises. Try to do as much as you can and ensure everyone gets a say in the activities.
Your day should be about joy, excitement and happiness not resentment and frustration. Put aside the drama for one day, have fun and get the most out of your cheap theme park tickets.
Can I get Gold Coast theme park cheap tickets with a concession card?
Potentially, however, it will depend on what concession card you hold.
In most cases, the major Gold Coast theme parks do not offer concession discounts to full-time students meaning you will be required to pay the full price of entry.
On the other hand, if you are a holder of a pension card (e.g. over 65 years old) your ticket may come at a discounted price.
How can I get to the Gold Coast theme parks from Brisbane?
You have three transport options to get you from Brisbane to the Gold Coast theme parks: car, bus or train.
Firstly, if you have a car then the theme parks are a quick, one hour drive from Brisbane city down the M1. The turn offs are clearly marked so you shouldn’t miss the exit.
Second, you can choose the bus. Dreamworld in particular is an official bus stop between Brisbane and the Gold Coast and could be a convenient option if you cannot access a car.
Finally, if you decide to catch the train, both the Village Roadshow theme parks and Dreamworld are located between Coomera and Helensvale stations. Just hop on the Gold Coast line from Brisbane and you’ll be there in no time. Best of all, you don’t have to worry about parking.
I’m staying in Surfers Paradise: how do I get to the theme parks?
Like with Brisbane, you can choose between car, bus or train.
If you’re driving, the Gold Coast theme parks are located just 20 minutes north of Surfers Paradise.
On the other hand, Gold Coast bus services operate regularly and will drop you right at the front door. If you’re staying at a hotel, shuttle buses to the park may be available, however, you will need to check with your hotel first.
Finally, the Gold Coast light rail service provides services to Helensvale Station, conveniently located right near the parks.
Where do I leave my belongings during the day?
Obviously, at a theme park with tons of rides, you’re going to be constantly on the move. That means setting up camp likely isn’t an option.
In addition to this, you can’t take your phone or backpack on a ride, so what do you do?
Luckily, almost every theme park has lockers available to rent for the day. They are relatively inexpensive and give you a safe location to leave your stuff. Once you’re ready to leave or if you decide to have a break, you can simply access your gear as needed.
As a guide, locker hire will typically only set you back about $10 for the day. A small price to pay for the convenience that comes with having a safe place to store your belongings.
When’s the best time to visit and get cheap theme park tickets?
The best day to visit will depend on both the park you’re visiting and your schedule.
While it’s an obvious statement, if you’re visiting a water park then it’s probably best to plan your trip during summer. On the other hand, visiting a park like Dreamworld which can include a lot of walking might be best through the cooler months.
As you’d expect, peak times will always be during school holidays. Often, this is the only available option for families. If you’re planning a visit during these times then it’s wise to expect large crowds and long lines.
A handy alternative for families can be to visit on a Saturday or Sunday during the school term. While visitor numbers may still be high, it won’t be quite as hectic as holidays.
Cheap theme park tickets may also be offered in off-peak times.
How much can I afford to spend on cheap theme park tickets: budgeting 101
While it’s great fun, a visit to the theme park isn’t cheap. Costs for a family of four run well into the hundreds and that only gets you through the gate.
Once you’re in you may need to buy food, drinks or things from the gift shop. In short, prepare for an expensive day.
If you’re not sure how much you can afford to spend, make a budget. The ASIC’s Moneysmart budget planner is a free and simple online tool that makes budgeting easy. Your income and expenses are separated into categories, giving you a clear picture of your financial situation.
Once you’re done you’ll know how much you can afford to spend on your day out.
