What are small loans for Centrelink customers?
Essentially what they say on the tin!
In other words, they are unsecured loans valued at $2,000 and under made available to people receiving a variety of Centrelink payments. These loans may be available from:
- Services Australia
- Community initiatives
- Short term lenders.
Each of the above options are unique. Monzi will explain how to apply for all of the above.
Small loans for Centrelink customers – Services Australia
If you receive certain benefits, you may be eligible for an online loan through Centrelink themselves. This is known as the Centrelink advance payment.
In short, consumers receive part of their Centrelink benefits early. Next, consumers repay this advance out of their future payments, interest free! These loans are often far better than applying for payday loans.
The amount you’re eligible to apply for will be determined by the benefit you receive, as well as your personal situation.
For example, disability pensioners with dependents may be eligible for more than a single person receiving Newstart.
Applying is easy and can be done online through Centrelink online or the Centrelink Express Plus App. For a detailed description on how to apply, visit the Services Australia website today.
These advance loans come with no credit check.
Who can apply for an advance?
Not every Centrelink customer is eligible. For example, you can apply for an advance at any time if you have received one of the following for more than three months:
- Age Pension
- Carer Payment
- Disability Support Pension
- Farm Household Allowance
- Parenting Payment
- Widow Allowance
- Wife Pension
- Youth Allowance for job seekers.
On the other hand, you may not be eligible if you already owe a debt to the Australian Government or if you cannot repay your advance within 6 months.
NILS – Small loans for Centrelink customers
The No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) is a community initiative set up by Good Shepherd Microfinance, in partnership with NAB.
NILS was set up to provide fair loans for Centrelink customers, as well as other low-income consumers. Specifically, NILS loans are designed to cover important goods and services.
For example, you can use NILS to cover:
- Household items and white goods, like fridges, washing machines etc.
- Certain medical services
- Electrical goods
- Education resources.
As the name suggests, NILS loans repayments are interest free.
How do I apply for NILS?
As mentioned, NILS provides micro loans for eligible Centrelink customers. Applying is a simple, four-step process. Here’s how it works:
- Enquire. Either begin the application online or call 13 64 57.
- Interview. If you make it to the next stage, you will need to meet with your local NILS provider. It is important you bring all relevant documents to your interview.
- Assessment. Your NILS provider will assess your application.
- Outcome. Lenders will inform you of the outcome. If you’re approved, you will reach an agreement on the repayment terms.
Keep in mind, not everybody is eligible for NILS. Specifically, you must meet three criteria to qualify.
- Possess a health care card or pension card or earn an after tax income of $45,000 or less a year.
- Live in your current address for over three months.
- Show an ability and desire to repay your loan.
NILS loans are offered in over 600 locations across Australia; find your closest provider here.

Can I get a small loan without a credit check?
Potentially, but it’s not guaranteed.
Each lender may vary in terms of their assessment policy. Moreover, a credit check may or may not be part of their process. As Monzi cannot speak on behalf of lenders, we cannot guarantee a payday loan without a credit check.
Keep in mind, a credit check is only one tool that lenders use to assess your application. Specifically, lenders will also consider your current financial situation, namely your:
- spending habits
- repayment history.

Medium personal loans value between $2,100 and $4,600. Moreover, depending on the lender, the repayment terms may range anywhere from 13 to 24 months.
Large personal loans range between $5,000 and $10,000. Although, you may be eligible for large personal loans up to $30,000. In addition, large credit contracts require security and may have repayment terms from 13 to 24 months.
Always bear in mind, the lender determines the repayment terms. Therefore, you may be offered terms different to what is presented above.
Can I get a loan if I’m not working?
Yes, potentially! But you will need to earn an income. After all, lenders need to make sure you will be able to afford your loan.
Lenders offering payday loans for Centrelink customers may be able to see your benefits as income. As long as they are regular, consistent and able to cover your repayments, you might be considered for approval.
On the other hand, you may qualify for a loan if you own an asset that earns you money. You could, for example, own a rental property that generates you regular and consistent cash. However, approval is always at the discretion of the individual lender you’re paired with.
How do I repay small loans for Centrelink customers?
Generally, lenders set up a direct debit from your account. Your repayments are, as a result, automatically deducted until your loan is settled. Finally, the direct debit stops automatically when you fully repay your loan.
Depending on your lender, you might be able to choose a weekly, fortnightly or monthly schedule. Therefore, repayments will automatically come out on the agreed-upon cycle.
Consumers need to get in contact with their lender early if they are going to miss a payment. Lenders may be able to cancel or reschedule your repayment if you provide them with enough notice.
Can I get same day small loans for Centrelink customers?
We cannot guarantee consumers receiving loans the same day they apply. In short, there is a number of variables that affect when you will have access to your cash.
Furthermore, inter-bank transfer times will have an impact on when you see your money. Transfers between certain banks may be quicker than others. So, who you bank with may also have an effect on your access to cash.
Do lenders charge fees for missed payments?
Yes, there will be additional fees payable for missed payments.
Your loan contract will include all the fees and charges associated with your loan. Therefore, it is important you read through your contract carefully before approving it.
If you have any questions, or are unsure of anything, get in contact with your lender directly. They will be able to walk you through any and all questions you might have.
Finally, be aware you are under no obligation to approve the contract offered to you.
Are small loans for Centrelink customers right for me?
Unfortunately, it is impossible for Monzi to answer this question. After all, there are so many variables at play.
In short, a good fit for one consumer may not be a good fit for another.
As a general rule, however, a small loan may be suitable for you if:
- you can reasonably afford your repayments without hardship; and
- the loan meets your needs and objectives.
How long does it take to apply with Monzi?
Application times may vary between consumers. In general, however, applying for cash loans is quick, straightforward and may only take you a few minutes.
