What are small loans for Centrelink customers

Essentially what they say on the tin!

In other words, they are unsecured loans valued at $2,000 and under made available to people receiving a variety of Centrelink payments. These loans may be available from:

  • The Department of Human Services
  • Community initiatives
  • Short term lenders.

Each of the above options is unique. Monzi will explain how to apply for all of the above.

Small loans for Centrelink customers – The Department of Human Services

If you receive certain benefits, you may be eligible for an online loan through Centrelink themselves. This is known as the Centrelink advance payment.

In short, consumers receive part of their Centrelink benefits early. Next, consumers repay this advance out of their future payments, interest free! These loans are often far better than applying for payday loans.

The amount you’re eligible to apply for will be determined by the benefit you receive, as well as your personal situation.

For example, disability pensioners with dependents may be eligible for more than a single person receiving Newstart.

Applying is easy and can be done online through Centrelink online or the Centrelink Express Plus App. For a detailed description on how to apply, visit The Department of Human Services website.

These advance loans come with no credit check.

Who can apply for an advance?

Not every Centrelink customer is eligible. For example, you can apply for an advance at any time if you have received one of the following for more than 3 months:

  • Age Pension
  • Carer Payment
  • Disability Support Pension
  • Farm Household Allowance
  • Parenting Payment
  • Widow Allowance
  • Wife Pension
  • Youth Allowance for job seekers.

On the other hand, you may not be eligible if you already owe a debt to the Australian Government or if you cannot repay your advance within 6 months.

NILS – Small loans for Centrelink customers

The No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) is a community initiative set up by Good Shepherd Microfinance, in partnership with NAB.

NILS was set up to provide fair loans for Centrelink customers, as well as other low-income consumers. Specifically, NILS loans are designed to cover important goods and services.

For example, you can use NILS to cover:

  • Household items and white goods, like fridges, washing machines etc.
  • Certain medical services
  • Electrical goods
  • Education resources.

As the name suggests, NILS loans repayments are interest free.

How do I apply for NILS?

As mentioned, NILS provides micro loans for eligible Centrelink customers. Applying is a simple, 4 step process. Here’s how it works:

  1. Enquire. Either begin the application online, or by calling 13 64 57.
  2. Interview. If you make it to the next stage, you will need to meet with your local NILS provider. It is important you bring all relevant documents to your interview.
  3. Assessment. Your NILS provider will assess your application.
  4. Outcome. Lenders will inform you of the outcome. If you’re approved, you will reach an agreement on the repayment terms.

Keep in mind, not everybody is eligible for NILS. Specifically, you must meet three criteria to qualify.

  • Possess a health care card or pension card or earn an after tax income of $45,000 or less a year.
  • Live in your current address for over 3 months.
  • Show an ability and desire to repay your loan.

NILS loans are offered in over 600 locations across Australia; find your closest provider here.

Can Monzi offer small loans for Centrelink customers?

Technically, Monzi does not offer payday loans for Centrelink. Instead, we may be able to quickly pair you with a lender who can!

Before applying with Monzi, make sure you have considered all other available options, including NILS or a Centrelink advance. After all, borrowing small amounts of money can be expensive and might not solve your problems.

If you are considering applying with Monzi, you will first need to meet four criteria.

  • Adult. All applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Australian. You must be an Australian Citizen or hold Permanent Residency.
  • Contactable. You will need a personal contact number and email address.
  • Income. You will need to have earned a regular income for the past 3 months into an online account.

Please note, Monzi simply tries to pair you with lenders. We cannot, unfortunately, guarantee your application will be approved. Approval, in short, rests with the lenders on our panel and is always subject to assessment.

Can I apply for instant cash loans on Centrelink 24/7?

Yes! With Monzi’s 100% online service, you can apply for loans anywhere 24/7; all you need is an internet connection.

So, whether you’re speeding across the Nullabor, or down in sunny Brisbane, you’re free to apply.

Keep in mind, however, you might not receive an outcome until the next business day if you apply after hours.

Finally, instant refers to loans that are processed super quickly. We can’t, however, guarantee how quick this will be. Certain lenders may be able to provide an outcome within an hour, while others might take longer.

Can I get a small loan without a credit check?

Potentially, but it’s not guaranteed.

Each lender may vary in terms of their assessment policy. Moreover, a credit check may or may not be part of their process. As Monzi cannot speak on behalf of lenders, we cannot guarantee a payday loan without a credit check.

Keep in mind, a credit check is only one tool that lenders use to assess your application. Specifically, lenders will also consider your current financial situation, namely your:

  • income
  • expenses
  • spending habits
  • repayment history.

Are all small loans for Centrelink customers unsecured?

The law requires all loans valued at $2,000 or under to be unsecured. So, if you do wish to apply for a secured loan, you will need to apply for something larger.

Luckily, Monzi’s panel of lenders may be able to offer more than just small personal loans.

Medium personal loans value between $2,100 and $4,600. Moreover, depending on the lender, the repayment terms may range anywhere from 13 to 24 months.

Large personal loans range between $5,000 and $10,000. Although, you may be eligible for large personal loans up to $30,000. In addition, large credit contracts require security and may have repayment terms from 13 to 24 months.

Always bear in mind, the lender determines the repayment terms. Therefore, you may be offered terms different to what is presented above.

Can I get a loan if I’m not working?

Yes, potentially! But you will need to earn an income. After all, lenders need to make sure you will be able to afford your loan.

Lenders offering payday loans for Centrelink customers may be able to see your benefits as income. As long as they are regular, consistent and able to cover your repayments, you might be considered for approval.

On the other hand, you may qualify for a loan if you own an asset that earns you money. You could, for example, own a rental property that generates you regular and consistent cash.

Approval is always at the discretion of the individual lender you’re paired with.

How do I repay small loans for Centrelink customers?

Generally, lenders set up a direct debit from your account. Your repayments are, as a result, automatically deducted until your loan is settled. Finally, the direct debit stops automatically when you fully repay your loan.

Depending on your lender, you might be able to choose a weekly, fortnightly or monthly schedule. Therefore, repayments will automatically come out on the agreed-upon cycle.

Consumers need to get in contact with their lender early if they are going to miss a payment. Lenders may be able to cancel or reschedule your repayment if you provide them with enough notice.

Can I get same day small loans for Centrelink customers

We cannot guarantee consumers receiving loans the same day they apply. In short, there is a number of variables that affect when you will have access to your cash.

For example, consumers may not receive their money until the following business day if they approve their loans contract after hours. This holds true for the weekend or public holidays as well.

Furthermore, inter-bank transfer times will have an impact on when you see your money. Transfers between certain banks may be quicker than others. So, who you bank with may also have an effect on your access to cash.

Do lenders charge fees for missed payments?

Yes, there will be additional fees payable for missed payments.

Your loan contract will include all the fees and charges associated with your loan. Therefore, it is important you read through your contract carefully before approving it.

If you have any questions, or are unsure of anything, get in contact with your lender directly. They will be able to walk you through any and all questions you might have.

Finally, be aware you are under no obligation to approve the contract offered to you.

Are small loans for Centrelink customers right for me?

Unfortunately, it is impossible for Monzi to answer this question. After all, there are so many variables at play.

In short, a good fit for one consumer may not be a good fit for another.

As a general rule, however, a small loan may be suitable for you if:

  • you can reasonably afford your repayments without hardship; and
  • the loan meets your needs and objectives.

How long does it take to apply with Monzi?

Application times may vary between consumers. In general, however, applying for cash loans is quick, straightforward and may only take you a few minutes.

One we have your application, we’ll do our best to give you an outcome within the hour. 60 minute outcomes are, unfortunately, only possible during normal business hours.

Hardship variation

In short, consumers may be eligible for a hardship variation if their circumstances change. Specifically, consumers that can no longer afford their repayments may be eligible.

If you, for example, lose your job, you may be able to apply for hardship. Moreover, lenders may offer a repayment holiday if you qualify.

In addition, get in contact with your lender directly to apply.
